Can you help?

We know Mrs Williams enjoys dunking a biscuit in her cup of tea, but this week her biscuit fell in her tea.

So, as part of Science week Reception did an investigation, to help Mrs Williams find the BEST biscuit for dunking in her tea!!

We talked about things we must keep the same to ensure it is fair and we varied the biscuits.

We made predictions and talked about the changes we observed. We recorded our results and looked at the numberline to compare the results.

Here are our findings!!

Across school children have been practising their working scientifically skills during science week.

The children in year 1 investigated which was the best biscuit for dunking. We talked about which enquiry type would be the most suitable for answering our question. We planned our investigation and worked in teams to carry out a simple test. We each had a role. We then took an average of the results of each table and created a shared table of results. Mrs Sharples then asked us to record our results using a block chart.

We were all brilliant scientists today!

As part of Science week Reception investigated which temperature was the best for dunking biscuits. We looked at the variables we could change and what we should keep the same, listed our equipment predicted what we thought would happen and drew a simple conclusion. We decided the hotter the liquid the quicker a biscuit would break. We recorded our results and looked at a graph to describe what had happened.

We had to think about what we would do the same and what we would do differently if we were to do the investigation again. We though about what actions would help our results to be more reliable.

We then though about other question that we would like to investigate following this. For example, Alysia suggested that, after finding out that the chocolate digestive was the best dunker, we could compare it to a plain digestive and see if the chocolate made a difference to the results.

We were all brilliant scientists today!

LC: how can we group different rocks?

Today, we learned about the different ways that rocks can form: naturally and by human processes. After looking at the rock cycle, we used the Easi-Scope microscopes and magnifying glasses to observe the appearances of a range of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks closely. We referred to the vocabulary that we learned last week as we did this. We then used a classification key to identify rocks by name and as either igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary based on their appearances and simple physical properties listed in the key. We moved around the room to different rock stations. After we had classified the rocks, we stuck images of the rocks that we had handled into a table.

We had access to the Easy Scopes and the wider range of rocks through the STEM Enthuse Partnership of which we are a member.

Reception loved looking for signs of Spring on their ‘Spring Hunt’. We saw shoots and buds growing 🌱🌾

For our science lesson today we went out onto the local field and observed the living things that we could see in the microhabitats there. We looked in the grass, in the soil and under logs and branches. We found a few early spring flowers and several minibeasts. We then discussed why they could be found in these places.

This week in Science we had an extremely fun (and smelly) lesson dissecting poo to find out if it was from a carnivore, herbivore or an omnivore. We used all the learning we know so far to help us with our investigation.

(Please note, it wasn’t real poo but the children nearly believed it!)
