In our Now Press Play experience, we identify that most living things live in habitats and which they are suited to. We described how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants. Our mission was to find a new habitat for people of Planet Doom.
During today’s worship the children had the opportunity to watch an inspiring live-stream event from the UK Space Education Office. World experts and leading researchers “popped” into the classroom to talk about tackling climate change and the restoration of nature.
Y6 are learning about the heart and its structure in their science lessons. To help them to understand this more fully and to make it ‘real’, we looked at (and held) dissected hearts in class. We successfully identified the four main chambers, alongside the aorta and pulmonary arteries and veins. The children pulled a few faces, but had lots of laughs and giggles whilst exploring the lamb’s hearts.
Pupils from the Year 3 STEM club took part in a science fair hosted by Smithills High School.
The fair was made possible through funding from STEM. We are now half way through a 2 year partnership between schools across Bolton. The purpose of the partnership is to raise attainment and progress in science and also increase science capital and enthusiasm for science which may in turn encourage more children to think of a career in STEM.
The children took part in a range of tasks themed around the topic of mining indium. The tasks were scored and judged throughout the day by teaching staff and independent STEM ambassadors who had backgrounds such as engineering and geology. The children took part in a tech filled session about atoms, they built a wheel barrow, created a timed marble run, made an O wing glider and completed some literacy tasks. The children also presented a project (which they have been working on this half term) to the ambassadors- they spoke confidently and showed great maturity when they were questioned by the STEM ambassadors. As a school, we achieved 2nd place over all out of the 15 teams and the children earned 3 individual awards between them for exhibiting characteristics of a good scientist such as team work, listening, resilience, being knowledgeable and problem solving. We are so proud of them!
Children from year 3 have taken part in STEM club each week. They have learned about the pros and cons of mining and are now getting ready to take part in an enrichment day at Smithills High School next week.
The children have been thinking about the benefits and draw backs of hypothetical mining of Winter Hill for precious indium which is used in touch screens and other electrical devices.
The children are now preparing to present their balanced argument to a selection of STEM ambassadors. We will update you with how they get on.
